What is Methylation?

Methylation is a chemical process that occurs in cells. It involves adding a small chemical group called a methyl group to a molecule. This process can happen to different molecules such as DNA, RNA, and proteins. In short, Methylation can affect your DNA and affect gene expression and play a role in regulating various biological processes. This is why it is so important for the overall health of individuals.

This chemical process is a must for the body to perform many different tasks to maintain homeostasis:

  • Fight infections
  • Regulate Blood Pressure
  • Form good muscle tone
  • Have a regulated nervous system
  • Detox
  • Neurotransmitter

Pretty much all processes of the body involve methylation.

MTHFR: When Methylation is Not Working Correctly

Most common symptoms if methylation is not working correctly:

  • Fatigue
  • Mood disorders (anxiety and depression)
  • Brain function (brain fog)
  • Digestive issues
  • Hormonal imbalance

50% of the population have a gene mutation of MTHFR, also known as a gene SNP. In the case of MTHFR, the gene snip slows the process of this enzyme. You can also have many other gene SNP’s that can affect your overall function of the body.

MTHFR is one of the beginning genes of methylation and is responsible for taking folate through the rest of methylation. So, if you have a gene mutation, you can see how the entire methylation process is thrown off.

How 1 Step Family Wellness Can Help MTHFR

There is testing that can be performed in our office if you suspect this may be your issue. Gene testing is becoming more common place and very thorough to see all the gene issues you may have. In our office we do a Happy Gene check swab to gather this information. We also have an in-office visit that uses muscle testing to figure out where in the methylation cycle the patient is stuck.

This is also used to prepare the body for chronic infection work. More on that in a different article.

Both of these are important because it allows for the doctors to create a customized daily vitamin specific to your genetic needs along with supporting your body against daily stressors. Just because you have the gene SNP does not necessarily mean you have to be supported there and you may need support in an area that is NOT a gene SNP due to the stressors on the body.

As a reminder there are three main types of stress. You have Physical, Chemical, and Emotional stress that breaks the body down.
